Set along the southern shore of Payette Lake and surrounded by forested mountains, McCall is one of Idaho’s best-known mountain communities. Located about 100 miles north of Boise, the town combines a small, walkable downtown with lakefront living and year-round access to some of the state’s best outdoor recreation.
Payette Lake is at the center of life in McCall. In the warmer months, the 5,330-acre lake becomes a destination for boating, paddleboarding, fishing, swimming, and days spent along the shoreline. Ponderosa State Park extends into the lake from the northeast side of town, offering beaches, trails, camping, and additional access to the water. Downtown sits directly along the lake, with restaurants, shops, parks, and the marina all within a compact area.
Winter transforms McCall into a mountain destination. Brundage Mountain, Nordic trails, snowmobiling, and backcountry recreation are all nearby, while the surrounding area offers hundreds of miles of hiking and mountain biking trails during the warmer months. Golf, fishing, hot springs, and access to the Payette National Forest add to the year-round appeal.
Homes in and around McCall range from cabins and mountain retreats to contemporary residences and substantial lakefront properties. Many owners use McCall as a second-home destination, while a smaller year-round population gives the town a strong local community beneath its resort-town character.
What makes McCall distinctive is the combination of mountain and lake living. Few places in Idaho offer the ability to spend summer days on the water, winter days in the mountains, and still have restaurants, shops, and a lively downtown just minutes from home.
